BACKGROUND MATERIAL

Opposing Viewpoints

Each book in this multi-volume set is devoted to a single topic of current interest, presenting many different, but carefully balanced, contradictory views of the topic. Examination of the varied impressions will assist the reader in formulating his own judgments. The articles are usually in pairs, such as, “Gun Control Will Reduce Violent Crime”/“Gun Control Does Not Reduce Violent Crime.”

Also available online (see right-hand column)

Taking Sides

Each volume is a debate-style reader (yes/no articles), reflecting a variety of viewpoints about individual topics within a broad issue. The goal of the series is for the student to learn the value of evidence in forming opinions, as well as to reach considered judgments by analyzing contrasting viewpoints. Each volume has a table of contents and an index.
